[Rhodes22-list] new boat owner outboard question

Chris,

Congratulations! I've a wedding to attend at Herrington Bay Resort in June
and I'll try to stop by and look for your new baby, if you aren't out
sailing. Herrington Harbor North or South?

Stan sold me a five-year old 9.9 Mercury outboard, which is now nine years
old. To be safe I'd go with Mary Lou's advice. However, a mechanic told me
I should flush my motor twice a year. I use super gas just because it's not
that expensive when you only use 5 gallons/year. I have never run the
engine dry. I have a mechanic service the motor once every two years.

I do add a fuel stabilizer to my gas everytime I fill up.

Don't forget to open your vent on your gas tank when in use. Most people
close in when not in use to help prevent moisture from getting into your
fuel.

Only problem I've had with my motor was a broken thermostat. If
temperatures are less than 40 degrees, I've found that my deep cell marine
battery doesn't have the juice to start the motor, and I need to manually
start it. When it comes time to replace the battery, I think I'll take
Rummy's advice and get a starting battery.

Good luck!
