Jim,

Are you sure? You should be able to wiggle cannister and stove into a void under the stove.  Like Rummy suggested, that picture will be worth a thousand, even snapshots from different angles.  Why cut a recess in the counter if you aren't meant to use it?  Your action team is ready...
