It is always the preferred action to remove the sail when storm conditions are predicted or for the winter. Having worked at a marina for over four years I can attest to sails that appeared to be secured having been unfurled or deployed when a bit of wind got under & eventually worked it loose. (Current marina policy is that if a named storm is forecast for our area, the marina will remove (and not necessarily neatly) all canvas and stow it below....unless the owner responds to the email alert sent out by the marina. We have seen the damage a boat 'under sail and in a slip' can do in a storm.)
 
That said, I have to leave my headsail on. I tie a line a line from well above the clew (I use a boat hook to lift the loop 'way high) all around the furled sail. This has worked so far. As my boat is at my pier facing west, the stbd side is broadside to NW & the open creek....I turn my rudder to stbd (so it is over against the port stern, in other words) and move the boom over to port, thereby lessening the pressure of the water on the rudder and wind on the bit of sail protruding from the mast.

I sail on the Chesapeake Bay, this is my first season.  I singlehand sail
and have been experimenting with different sail plans and wind conditions. 
My confidence is building with more experience and I find that lowering the
boom and taking in a balanced sail plan handles most wind conditions.  I
seem able to adjust the genoa in almost any wind condition without any
problems.  I have run into a number of problems with the main sail furling
in high wind and this is what causes me the most concern in high wind.  A
lot of main sail area flapping in the wind can become uncontrolable.  I have
also had a two of the main sheet shackles come loose just at the wrong time
but recovered from both incidents.  So long as I lower the boom and roll in
the main early enough high winds are manageable for me singlehanded.  On the
Chesapeake Bay seas can go from flat to moderate white caps to 3-4 foot
rolling waves pretty quick as the wind builds.  This has been my most
challanging condition to deal with.  Even running before high seas with a
storm jib creates a somewhat uncontrolable rolling and pitching that is not
very comfortable.
