[Rhodes22-list] Outboard recommendations - Lightest to Meet Your Requirements

The best advise is the lightest engine to meet your needs.  Stan was using an electric trolling engine the last time we visited the factory.  Now he only has a short run up a canal to his dock.  Out on the Sound it may not be adequate but that is what the sails are for.

We use a Yamaha 9.9 but that is because we fight the currents in the Florida inlets.   Having said that I have also sailed through the inlets with no problems but the winds and tide have to be favorable.

If you are on an inland lake, you don't need much of an engine to move the boat to its dock or mooring.  It is only when the wind drops or a storm begins to brew and you want to beat it home.  In this case a 5 HP would be fine. Finding one with a longer shaft seems to be the problem.

At one point I went for three months without an engine.  Really hones your sailing skills.

Hank,

FYI the Nissan (Tohatsu) 8 and 9.8 weight exactly the same.  I believe the
electric start is 92 LBS.

Fair winds,
