My 87 R22 came with a 4 hp Mariner 2 stroke. When it died, I replaced
it with a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton 4 stroke. In 6 seasons of bay &
some open water sailing (out of Quincy, MA) I have never felt I did
not have enough power to get through wind & waves.
