Steve,
The winches are fine. You need to refine your method of using them. When
either single handed or with crew, bring the sheet across to the high side
after wrapping it around the lee winch and then wrap around windward winch
and cleat. It's easy to take up the slack by simply pulling or pushing in
the
middle and then taking up the slack. Bigger winches would be overkill on
the R22.

Does anyone have recent experience with replacement winches? (I've
checked
the archives and found just a few posts).

Our 1984 has size 6 Lewmars. They seem to be overpowered by the genoa,
which I measure to be 165%. I recently sailed on a 26' boat with big,
self-tailing Lewmars. They made jib trimming quite easy. I'd appreciate
any opinions.

Thanks,

Steve
