[Rhodes22-list] New Member (with extras)

WOW I agree. Can almost smell the salt spray in Campo's work.. But "I must Go Down to the Sea Again..." was John Maesfield, not Mansfield. Sometime, when waiting for a delayed flight, I'll try a poem-parody all "Rhodesy."

  Elle:
Mansfield is nice, but he's no JJ Camp. Witness this poem as proof.
  Joe

  The Captain’s Dream

The Schooner "Nathaniel Bowditch" Camden, Maine

  Captain Gib Philbrick

  JJ Camp

  On salt-scrubbed planks

of the schooner’s deck, the dark

  Atlantic whispers cold

secrets past my human ear: talk

  of mariners’ lives swallowed

  by storm and love

of the salt spray. And we hoist

  the gaff-rigged sails

  aloft, anticipating a promise

  in the warming day. Ignorant

  of her peril, the mate

flies aloft to set the tops’l as it should.

  Off the beam, drastic icy

  tides assault Maine’s forgiving

  rock-bound isles.

  Below the darkened glassy surface,

  where anchors chain their

  charges to the aloof

  and spinning earth,

  lobsters drag
  enormous claws

  across the ancient bed,

and mermen gaze up at our elegant

  lady’s sturdy keel

  in admiration—and in envy.

  Aft at the wheel—polished hard

  with years of
  tack and jibe—

the captain throats out orders in an ancient

  tongue: “Ready about!
  Hard to lee!”

  The Nathaniel Bowditch yawns

to his command: He eases her

to starboard again, and we sail—

  almost asleep—into Gib’s

  fluid dream of the sea.

  Alan:
John Mansfield, I believe. How's this for a close?
And tiller's kick, and the furling jibAnd the comfortable cockpit, all making--A vigorous sail where I won't need to bailAnd no sailor's asses are aching.

OK you two, Joe and Matthew LIT. SCHOLARS. Finish the parody. If you need the original poem and reference, let me know please.

  Ben:
"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T S Eliot. Lots of imagery and symbolism and very complex in his references. There is a pay-off (after about sixty readings).

Elle is right. This list does indeed need some culture. I've never even
heard of Prufrock, but I'll have to look it up; I love the line quoted.

  How about a haiku?

  Accidental jibe
  That gently? Hard to believe

*I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.*

Alas poor Mary and her lamb
They've fallen in, oh crap oh damn
Tis shame they cannot swim like toads
Or better yet sail like a Rhodes.
