Eric,

There sure are alot of unknowns, and the only way to really validate the boat condition is to see.  Even then, an experienced eye can uncover so many potential issues.  Tell us where you locate and where the boat is located and we might be able to link someone together with you.  A '77 is an older R22, but this is not necessarily a problem.  At this point I wouldn't jump.

I traveled to Charlotte with one of our newer skippers almost a year ago to survey a boat he was totally unfamiliar with, and while he is unnamed, I know how grateful he and his family were to save many bucks and be confident they were not putting scarce dollars into something possibly not usable.  If there is some logistic logic I'll bet one of our skippers would belly up to the bar to help you out the same way.
