Sailing Checklist


Launching
  a.. Update weather report (radar, visual)
  b.. File sail plan (with a friend)
  c.. Safety
    a.. Get out safety equipment (throw ring, throw rope, horseshoe, life 
jackets, flares)
    b.. Ensure compliance with Coast Guard requirements  (inc. boat 
documentation)
  d.. Prepare boat for motoring
    a.. Wash down boat if fresh water available
    b.. Check battery, gas supply (primary & backup), VHF (radio call), 
depth sounder
    c.. Start motor (warm up, water flowing, working well); test control
    d.. Ladder up
    e.. Bilge pump working
    f.. Equipment available: boat hook, cockpit cushions
    g.. Review charts & local conditions; determine short term path
    h.. Lower rudder and secure
    i.. If not single handing, make assignments
      a.. someone on bow watch; releases mooring or dock lines; pulls up 
fenders;
    j.. If single handing
      a.. release all but one dock line; set up last line to be handled from 
cockpit
  e.. Prepare boat for sailing (short of sail raising)
    a.. Inspect sails (ready to raise, attached); lines (good shape, 
running); turnbuckles (inc tension)
      a.. Reef if necessary
    b.. Centerboard working ok
    c.. Set up main sheet & traveler
  f.. Moving off
    a.. Review plan
    b.. Ensure all items are stowed properly
    c.. Set GPS
    d.. Check other boat traffic
    e.. Put motor into gear while carefully controlling final dock/mooring 
line
    f.. Get on course
    g.. Turn back when leaving harbor to more easily recognize it when 
returning
    h.. Stow dock lines and fenders
Sailing
  a.. Get out into clear water free of other boat traffic and deep enough 
for centerboard down position
  b.. Lower centerboard
  c.. Release boom
  d.. Point boat into wind & secure tiller if single-handing or make 
assignment
  e.. Raise main sail
  f.. Check other boat traffic
  g.. Fall off (if single handing, set tiller)
  h.. Turn off and lift up motor
  i.. Do quick check around under sail
  j.. Unfurl genoa
  k.. Set sails
  l.. ENJOY!!


Returning to port
  a.. ID port or use GPS to locate (in fog, rain or whatever)
  b.. Put down and start motor; put in forward gear at low speed
  c.. Take down sails
    a.. reverse above
    b.. tie up sail loosely
  d.. Raise centerboard
  e.. Set course
  f.. Set fenders (unless on mooring)
  g.. Get dock lines ready
  h.. Stow as much equipment as necessary during motoring in; secure sails 
and cover
  i.. Bring boat into slip or mooring and tie down
  j.. Remove gas line and allow motor to run out of gas
  k.. Raise rudder
  l.. Stow remaining equipment
  m.. Adjust and secure dock lines
  n.. Turn off all electrical and electronics
  o.. Secure boom
  p.. Prepare items to be removed
  q.. Do walk-around boat to ensure all in shape
  r.. Wash down with fresh water if available
  s.. Disembark
