[Rhodes22-list] The best little drafting program and it's free!

Mike:

I have been using AutoCad, AutoCad Architect and more recently Autodesk
Revit for architectural design and drafting in addition to Sketch up for
design illustrations. AutoCad Architect tried to be a 3D design and
drafting tool but Revit has taken this idea much further. Revit allows us
to build a virtual model in 3d and test relationships of various design
elements and create a set of construction documents and renderings from the
single model file. The various components within the model such as doors,
windows, walls etc... have smart dynamic attributes that can be linked to
various tables, charts, product web sites, quantity tables, contractor cost
estimates etc...

We used to use 3d studio max to create 3d renderings but this was much too
complicated a program. Sketchup is a great product. I think Google has the
right idea in providing this univeral, easy to use product to a mass market
for free. Autodesk robs us every year with a mandatory subscription that
cost me over $700 per each of my five liscenses. Sketchup does not produce
the same level of documentation as Revit however so I am stuck supporting
Revit.

I would love to see if anyone has success in creating a 3d model of the
Rhodes 22 in sketchup or any other program. I explored this a bit but the
complex hull curvature makes it a real challange. My goal is to map out
electronic and other components in a 3d model of our boats. Let me know if
anyone has success in this. It would be pretty easy to share sketchup
models and collaborate.

Google warehouse is a good place to look for existing models. Enclosed is
an imgage from a sailboat model found in the google warehouse.
