[Rhodes22-list] Rhodes22-list Digest, Vol 2098, Issue 1

I only towed our R22 one time with a borrowed Ford 350 heavy duty truck.
It is a single axle trailer. It towed straight and true. Although the
only trouble I could foresee was stopping. No brakes on the trailer and
it felt like I couldn't have made a quick stop. Now I've bought a '10
Ford Flex v6 with a trailer package which includes a separate oil cooler
for the transmission and a larger radiator for the engine. It is rated
for 4500 pounds towing capacity and I thought that was adequate but when
I hear others using trucks with 6500 capacity I get nervous. Most of the
travel would be in relatively flat country, Michigan, western Ohio. What
is everyone's thought about the braking ability?

I have just about talked myself into a Rhodes 22, but before getting
too far down this road I want to know if anyone else has experienced
towing a Rhodes 22 with a Toyota Tacoma. My truck is a 2008 Tacoma
4x4 w/ a 6-cylinder and tow package. I live in the mountains of
western North Carolina and the closest "real" water is an hour away.
Does anyone have any advice? I am not sure I can swing a new boat and
a new truck.
Thanks, Bill

Drive in 3rd gear, watch radiator temp. closely, don't have less than
400 lb tongue wgt. and don't go over 50. You should be OK

I had my single axel trailer converted to a dual, with brakes, and it
tows beautifully. What is the towing rating for your truck?

Bill,
I have a'03 4-runner with a V-8 and a 5000lb tow capacity. I bought the
2
axle trailer for my Rhodes because of the short wheel base of the
suv,and
the extra braking power of the brakes on the extra axle. Most of us
owners
figure about 3000lbs for the boat, and about 1000-1400lbs for the
trailer.
Check the specs on your truck to see if it is rated for over 4000lbs.
With the 2 axle trailer, the boat placement on the trailer isn't as
critical to get proper tongue weight.(The single axle needs to have the
boat as far forward as possible,so the tail dosen't wag the dog.)

Bill,

We towed our Rhodes for two years with a V-6 4Runner, including home
to Cincinnati from Stan's, through the NC mountains. We kept our
speed down, Stan had the tongue weight just right, and we had no
problems.

Bill,
If your Tacoma is the one that has a 6500 tow rating, you will
probably be OK. We tow ours with a Nissan Frontier 2WD with a 6300
tow rating. It tows a heck of a lot better than our old Chev. Blazer
(5000 tow rating) but we did that for years without any problems. If
we had been towing in the mountains, we would have wanted something
with more oomph but on the flat and on I-95 it was fine. You'll want
a trailer with brakes and you'll want to be cognizant of how much
stuff you are loading in the truck and boat for towing.

Bill,

I have been towing mine for years with a V-6 Toyota 4 Runner rated at
5,000 lb capacity. Also have a single axle trailer and can actually
pull it on the highway and drive 65 mph with no problem. Have towed it
many miles but always on flat land. Your mountains and hills make it
more challenging but check the tow rating and the GVWR for your vehicle.
Dual axle trailer probable tows better and is more forgiving, but it
weighs more so that is the trade-off.

I towed a single-axle trailer with a 98 4wd VV-6 Blazer for five seasons
and
last year with a 2008 Highlander V-6 AWD, both with 5,000 lb rated
capacity.
I typically tow twice a year for launch and recovery, 30 miles one-way
relatively flat highway driving. I have taken the boat on vacation to
the
New Hampshire lakes region (~ 90 miles and more hills) with the Blazer.

For the trip to NH, since I was carrying luggage and vacation stuff too,
I
bought a weight distributing hitch (Equal-I-Zer brand) that also helps
with
sway control. No problems. I re-adjusted it to use on the Highlander
and
towed this last season with it. It really smoothes things out with the
boat
on the trailer. I don't worry about tongue weight, and the spring bars
tame
any sway, since the boat and trailer are almost twice as long as the
Highlander.

If you go this route, I don't recommend using the spring bars with the
trailer empty. It isn't required, and any bumps in the road are
transmitted
right from the unloaded trailer axle to your rear end for a jerky, noisy
ride.
