Guess I am lucky because auto repair owner where I got the trailer inspected every year has a big 5,000lb power boat which he trailers. Use hand gun to insert grease through bearings' Zerk grease fittings. Power grease gun might well cause problem you mention below - too much pressure.

However, with single axle trailer you can expect to replace bearing assemblies more frequently because of weight load per wheel. I did about every 10 years or 3500 miles but we always traveled with loads of gas cans, outboard, on skids, toilet, and 15 gls. of water plus camping equipment etc. which increased loading. Replaced brake shoes only once in 26 years.

  Bigal,

I have surge brakes and after only 3 years I had to have the shoes replaced at over $350. They told me that I over-greased the bearings and blew out the gasket which got grease all over the pads ruining them. Never saw anything in the directions about only adding grease to the bearing very rarely, like once per year, but found this out the hard way. After the fact I complained to Tie-Down Engineering who is the OEM and they finally sent me a new pair of brake shoes at n/c. Of course I had already gotten the job done so now I have an extra set for the next time it happens... Big difference though having brakes vs. not having them. Can definitely feel the difference is stopping ability so I guess the hassle is worth it.

I have surges on our original '83 Triad Single Axel one and the only maintenance is filling up the reservoir with hydraulic fluid and when getting the NY State required annual inspection, having the mech. pull a wheel during greasing to see if any brake parts are rusted out. Of course we've only sailed in fresh water. Can definitely feel surge brakes working when applied when rig is going down hill. What other maintenance problems have you experienced?
