Mary Lou:

When I first decided that I wanted some type of vang on the boat, I was
hoping to be able to make it more traditional but with the IMF and the
pop-top designed to slide up and down the mast, I have not thought of a
practical way to do it. You cannot make any permanent attachments to the
IMF mast base because of the top slider. If you mount hardware on both
sides to attach the vang; then that requires always remembering to loosen
it before the boom swings or you would run the risk of bending the boom. In
high stress situations, it's guaranteed to be forgotten. If I forget my
device, the worst thing to happen is that the sail won't tack, no damage and
readily corrected.

I thought about using the sail slot above the slider somehow, but that would
take a specialized part and might eventually distort the slot. The other
issue is the low angle a traditionally mounted vang would have with the boom
down.

So I came up with this untraditional remedy. A second set of eye straps
predicated on keeping the pop-top down with the boom in either position may
be the cheapest, most practical way to go. However, I am still open to
ideas. Whatever it is will have to allow full travel of the boom and not
interfere with the top slider.

Thanks,
David

David, have you given any thought of putting a fitting at the mast
for use with the pop-top down?
