Ben,
Phrased in that manner, no I don't agree parents should send their young
child out for their own vicarious search for 15 minutes of fame. I do think
if a child whishes to challenge themselves at a task or goal and it can be
made reasonably safe (the responsibility to ensure this is the parents first
of all and with the participation of the child), why not?

This is not quite hypothetical for me. My son wanted to sail around the Med
by himself when he was 16. By the time he was 17 he was ready and he paid
for half of the boat. We sailed together for a couple of months so I was
sure he was ready and then left him on the coast of Turkey where he spent
the next 5 months sailing all over the eastern Med. Now the Med is not the
roaring 40's for sure! There were still challenges and some degree of
danger but I think the experience of accepting them help develop my young
son into a self-reliant, disciplined and sensitive man that he is today. So
perhaps I should modify my statement to "Sure, as long as it is for the
challenge, the risk is not too high, and not for the approval or
entertainment of vicarious thrill seekers at the expense of seriously
endangering the child.

So with that said, anyone want to buy a 22foot Rhodes Boat? Well not the
kind you think. My son's 22 foot boat is in Rhodes, Greece on the hard. He
is selling it for a $3500. Any takers?

Rummy, Ben & Chris;

Please tell me you guys are just jerkin' my chain. You don't really think
it's OK to send a child to sea alone in a quest for...what?...some stupid
"record". Maybe we should stock her up with plenty of Mt. Gay? I have real
problems with our "celebrity" culture and this case just pushes my buttons
for some reason. Don't worry, I'll get over it as soon as the medicine kicks
in.
