Joe, picture was really in response to Mary Lou's question, and to
point out to you the side rail option. Just FYI, the lines to the
starboard cleats were actually just there for a winter storm that had
come through - to tie the boat off the dock. Usually it's just tied on
the port side and it rides just fine. Per your question, it's good to
have a foot or more of play between the boat and dock, depending on
how much wave action youl have. The lines act as shock absorbers.
Another reason to use 3/8" line.
