[Rhodes22-list] One month & two days (LEE)

Joe,
We don't have a bilge pump. Fretless has been in the water
(seasonally) for 10 years. We have occasionally had water in the
bilge. When that happens we get out the sponge and the bucket and
then start rebedding things until we fix it. (sources of water have
been the side ports and the electrical connector at the mast) We now
have a dry bilge. We like it that way.

The R22 has positive floatation so except under extreme circumstances
(think hurricane, snow or ice) you don't have to sorry about it
sinking. I have it on a first hand account that with water coming in
continuously it floats with the water in the cabin up to about the
level of the bench seat. A mess but still not sunk. The problem with
bilge pumps is that unless you have a charging system for your
battery and vigilant neighbors who notice that the pump is running a
lot, they will just run down your battery and quit working. If it
will make you feel more comfortable go ahead and get one. We haven't
found it necessary. We don't leave the boat in the water in the
winter. We pull the boat when hurricanes seriously threaten.

BTW, there is not much height (depth?) in the bilge so you would have
fit a pump accordingly.

Best,
Mary Lou
