We found that the battery drain on the 12 volt Norcold type is too great when motor isn't running. So we plug it in only when it is running off the alternator and put a couple of narrow plastic*Ice Its" to maintain the cold and they partly refreeze when norcold is running. We just use  the electric cooler for important stuff like steaks, butter, eggs and beer. We eat out of cans a lot, like stuffed beef ravioli and 4 bean salad for vegetables when cruising.

  Coleman has an icebox (12 volt) that fits this space pretty well--pretty 
  inexspensive--I bought a small norcold (12 volt) from West Marine that works 
  very well
