[Rhodes22-list] Speed fix

Alan,

I don't think I would do too well in an actual race because it would
take me too long to figure out how to best set my sails for a particular
tack. For the same reason I have a difficult time catching up to
another boat. On the other hand I love it when someone tries to catch
me. With our light boats, big sails, and low drag; many bigger boats
can't keep up when I get to choose the tack. I've also noticed that
quite a few boats under 30 feet don't have much more length at the
waterline than our Rhodes' 20 feet.

Without lots of human ballast (and a U. of Penn helmsman) I usually do
much better the lighter the wind.

If you use 300 square feet of sail and 3,000 pounds of displacement, our
sail area/displacement ratio is 23.08.  Cruisers are 10-15;
cruiser/racers are 16-20; and racers are over 20. And as everyone
knows; red hulls are the fastest, then blue, then yellow.

With a 15 knot breeze on a broad reach and son (was on U. of Penn
sailing team I n'77) at the helm, we have easily beaten Catalinas and
O'Days and have held our own with deep keel Tanzers, all 22's We need 3
adults on windward side with 175 jib out all the way which makes the
difference. Hunter 24's pass us like we were creeping along. Wife won't
sail under these conditions.

  Hank,
Thanks for the response. Yes, I have read several articles on
sail boats that exceed the measured wind speed. Of course, I was
amazed
at what I thought was impossible. DAH. I'm NOT a good sailor but if I
am out on the lake and I see another sailboat I try to catch and pass
the "competition". One O'Day-22 has been out on the lake several times

and it appears my Rhodes is faster. I really don't know if a Rhodes is

fast or not. It really helps that the other boats don't know they are
  in a race. Jim
