[Rhodes22-list] Daysailing

Thanks, Mary Lou. I've read the account and it looks wonderful. Down here on the Gulf Coast we don't have the pretty water and scenery, but there's lots of interest on a small scale.

We kept our boat in the driveway for a couple of reasons. First, it's a lot cheaper than a slip, and for much of our boat-owning years that was a major consideration. Second, the captain (my husband) loves to tinker, and it was a lot easier to work on the boat if he didn't have to drive somewhere and try to remember all the tools and materials he'd need. Our boat has a lot of small but vital custom additions.

Rigging and de-rigging took us about an hour. If we had the in-mast furling and roller-furling jib that would be cut down quite a bit. We always spent at least two nights on the water, and went out several times a year. Back when I taught school we'd take a two-week vacation on the boat during the summer.

We haven't yet seen an actual Rhodes. We're trying to figure out when we'd have time to do that. I work full time and it's hard to find a few days that I can take off. There doesn't seem to be anything closer than a half day's drive.

Cathy,
I can think of no better argument for the Rhodes 22 as a cruising
boat than Chris Geankoplis's account of his cruising adventures in
the San Juan Islands posted earlier today. If you missed it, it's at:

Give it a close reading if you are seriously considering the Rhodes 22.

BTW, we cruise in ours but we've never trailered it much preferring
to keep it in a slip. It's a fair amount of work to set up but if you
are motivated it's doable. There are folks here who trailer
regularly. It seems to me that there are folks who have had the setup
down to under an hour. Because we only do it once a year, it always
takes us more.

Best,
Mary Lou
