Art,

The posts below are from January 2007. I think USAA will now insure
anyone who works for the government.

A few months later I bought a 2007 Toyota Avalon and within a month was
the number two car in a six-car pile-up. The first four cars all had
USAA insurance. Since I was pushed into the first car it wasn't my
fault (aside from doing 80 mph on the guy's bumper) and with just one
insurer I figured it would be any easy claim. The claim took forever
and I couldn't use Toyota to do the repairs. I had to fight for
diminution of value (car value allegedly dropped $5,000) and USAA
originally didn't offer to pay a dime.

But did I drop USAA? NO--because I'm so dang loyal! I did get
satisfaction by changing my password to STATEFARM.

A few months later I was on my way to the repair shop to fix a minor
problem that wasn't fixed properly the first time. About a block before
the police station (right by the Navy stadium) a police officer
rear-ended me. I was completely stopped so this time it really wasn't
my fault. I felt bad for her being a cop and all; and she was only half
way done applying her make-up.

I'm sure it's all Toyota's fault somehow.

Dave,

USAA policy #229 05 62
$19,000 insurance for the 1986 Rhodes22
$1,000 for the 9.9hp Mercury outboard
$500 deductible
$300,000 liability
$5,000 medical payments
$128 annual premium for 3-1-07 to 3-1-08 (was $114 last year)

I sent them General Boats' invoice but didn't get a survey. I suspect
it would be difficult to get $20K out of them if the boat were to be
totaled, even though the policy is for insured replacement versus
appraised value.

If you quote my policy number, hopefully you won't have to go through
all the whining and threatening.

Good luck!

Dave & Jim,

I've had USAA for about 30 years. I think you still need to be military
or retired military to use them, but they may have changed their
requirements. They have great rates but I've been unimpressed with
their service lately.

A year ago BoatUS was about twice as much as anyone else that quoted me.
Apparently they suffered a lot of hurricane claims. USAA wouldn't
insure my 1986 boat beyond $8K. After much whining and threats, they're
now insuring her for purchase price, which includes the recycling and a
boatload of extras.

Good luck!

Jim,

I thought I remembered that USAA wouldn't insure a boat more than 10yrs
old,
and their agent had no appreciation of refurbished vice used. You had
no
problem getting your boat insured with them?

Any sense as to how USAA insurance stacks up against BoatUS?

Lee,

A couple of years ago USAA, easily my preferred #1 told me they no
longer could directly underwrite boat policies, instead could broker a
policy. Are they open for boats again? I compared their broker option
and it was much more expensive, so I used BoatUS. I'll never complain
about BoatUS, they got me out of a pickle last Fall when my trailer
brakes froze on my Annapolis foray. Wow!
