Peter,

I recommend buying a new boat especially since it's not my money.

You think Stan is shrewd? Wait until you start negotiations. Start with a
budget and go up from there. :)

I too was a little disappointed that recycled boats start out stripped, but
it's fun to pick out the exact toys you want installed.

Sailed along side one of Stan's first recycling job a few weeks ago:

Actually the schooner Sultana was downrigged and started its "recycling" a
few days later.

Good luck with your decision!

Lee--

I haven't ordered or purchased anything yet--I need to look into financing
first. I'm leaning (or listing) toward ordering a new R22. I've pretty well
decided the 26RK is rather a lot of boat for someone like me--and not really
all that trailerable.

I spent about 4 hours at General Boats talking to Stan & looking at
boats--an enjoyable afternoon. It was too cold & windy to sail. He's shrewd:
showed me a spanking new boat first, then bad-mouthed much of the current
selection of recyclables. Did you know he's now into buying used Catalina
27s and modifying them for the Rhodes type centerboard? He's already
launched one to test it. He also showed me an old O'Day (just as a
curiosity) on which the whole cabin raises like a poptop.

I had been thinking that buying a recycled R22 would be a way to get various
electronics & other options already installed. That's part of the appeal of
getting a used boat--they sometimes come pretty well loaded. So it was a
surprise to learn that Stan strips all that off when he recycles a boat.

Two days later I stopped in St Augustine to visit a friend, came down with a
horrible stomach bug & didn't get back here to Apollo Beach until last
Thursday. There has been a great deal to attend to, which is why I'm just
beginning to look into boat mortgages.

I'm sure I'll be coming to you for more advice!
