I'm not sure how you would replace only one backstay. You would have to splice the new one to part of the old one near the mast head, and that doesn't sound too secure to me.  I think you're better off duplicating what's on the boat.  The two stays converge near the mast head and put equal tension on the mast.  Two individual stays, regardless of how they connect at the mast head would make equalizing the tension difficult.  IMHO - rob

The starboard backstay is a bit frayed, I think I'd be more comfortable
replacing it.

Both backstays are fabricated from one long cable.  I think I can get away
only replacing one side???
Anybody have experience with this?
