Chris,
Always enjoy your sketches very much keep the Charlevoix sketches
coming. My wife and I spent a week on our Rhodes 22 at Lake Charlevoix in
July. It is about a 9 hour drive from our home in southern Ohio but was well
worth the drive. If anyone is still looking for a vacation destination we
fell in love with the area and would recommend it as a great destination for
a Rhodes 22.
We spent 5 nights at the Charlevoix marina on Round Lake which is a
beautiful natural harbor between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. From the
marina you can head west 1/2 mile under the drawbridge into Lake Michigan or
head east 1/2 mile through the canal into Lake Charlevoix. Lake
Charlevoix is about 15 miles long and about 2 miles wide and spans from
Charlevoix to Boyne City. The water is cool, deep and crystal clear.Another
arm of the lake stretches 8 miles to East Jordan and is an interesting sail
when the wind pipes up on the main lake.
You can make reservations online for the Charlevoix City Marina by
going to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website. There is also
a smaller marina at Boyne City on the other end of the lake. Of the 5
nights we spent at the Charlevoix Marina there was live music 3 nights at
the pavilion which we were able to enjoy while lounging in the cockpit. You
can easily walk to the grocery, pizza parlor, and several restaurants. We
enjoyed the Weathervane restaurant near the drawbridge.( expensive but great
food great view). I would recommend spending a few nights at Charlevoix
then sailing down to Boyne City to spend a night or two. Head back to
Charlevoix in the morning before the waves build. Usually this would be a 15
mile beat so you may want to do some motoring.
There is a great launch ramp about 1 1/2 miles from Charlevoix Marina
next to Irish Boat Works. I will try to send some photos later once I find
out how . Oh, and the best part of all, we spent 6 days on the boat and my
wife loved it and wants to go back!

Happy sails,

Mark
