Elle & all,

If in the direct path of a major storm or hurricane, I always haul and EARLY! Once on land (high ground, well above the anticipated storm tide), secure the trailer to the ground (or other stationary object, not the car) and secure the boat to the trailer (straps). This is very important because a boat on land is more easily damaged if not tied down than if you left it in the water.
"A study by MIT after hurricane Gloria found that boats stored ashore were far more likely to be saved than boats stored in the water. For many boat owners and marinas, hauling boats is the foundation of their hurricane plan. (from http://www.boatus.com/hurricanes/brochure.asp)"
If you cannot haul the boat, DO NOT STAY ABOARD DURING THE STORM. Set spring lines for storm surge (15' sometimes), if possible, or moor the boat on a HEAVY ANCHOR (mushroom type for soft bottom areas, mine is 250 lbs for the R22). Even two lightweight anchors on long lines may pull out, in which case, they will snag on other anchors in the area as the boat is blow about and bangs into the other craft.

No matter what you do, remove as many valuable items as is reasonable in case the boat is lost or severely damaged. Tie all remaining items down to prevent damage if the boat is subjected to high winds. Remove all cloth and store safely - sails unfurled in high winds will move the boat (even on a trailer) and cause additional damage until they are shredded.

Rob & all,

Looks as if I'm right in line w/the storm...I'm on a protected creek off the Potomac, but the storm most likely will push water up the Bay....the water backs up in the creeks...for Isabel, the water obscured even the tops of the dock pilings. My boat is OK as long as the water doesn't rise past the level of the dock (about 3 feet over high tide or so...)

I'm thinking of anchoring the boat out in the creek...but am unsure ...two anchors? set at 45deg??? Even if it goes aground it is only soft mud.....

Suggestions, please..
