Geoff, I hope you gave many great years with your boat. 

Did you not get the written instructions from Stan for stepping and unstepping the mast?  

Did you mention that you were starting the motor with the boat on the trailer?  Not letting it run I hope.  It needs to be in the water to cool the engine when running.
