[Rhodes22-list] Was Jib sheet connection, now unseen heavy leaking

Mel,
Sorry we both seemed to disappear, a lot of prior commitments... and boat problems, but good outcome on mine. That leak of 2-1/2 years was finally discovered, actually solved. When the boat was on the hard, we power-sprayed all the deck joint, centerboard cavity, and drain holes from the underside, with only a smattering of water in the bilge. I had previously sealed most deck fittings, and ports, but nothing changed much.

My son took the boat out but forgot the plug (I need it with additional weight over yours, especially the motor, galley, etc.), and had significant flooding. The bilge pump added 2 years ago with this problem had the automatic go out to add to things. After it was pumped, and with the plug I took it out with the plug and still had some flooding. I focused on the hose off the rear cockpit drain, tapped it up with radiator tape, and towels. It was damp but not soaked like the boat was. Anyhow, it was time to replace it as I found a small leak on the backside (non-visible side) of the hose with a mirror.

As it's below the waterline, I needed to pull the boat for a 15 minute change of hose. That took a while to orchestrate as the marina I normally use, has an enclosed lift, so the mast would have to be dropped. My own marina pulled it, I replaced the hose with a heavy-duty flexible pool hose and a lot of silicone sealer which happened to be the answer. After drying, and running it at high speed when the flooding normally happened, only some dampness. The original silicone seal of 14 years, had deteriorated, and even with the plug in, water was being pushed up between the hose and cast drain fitting by higher speeds, ocean waves and under power, past the seal under the cockpit floor. It 's no miracle or fluke happening, but it certainly didn't show any other way. It's now 3 weeks of a relatively little water, only a sponge worth from heavy waves, etc. We put on over 150 miles since launch in mid May.

Anyhow, Rob has his new sails with a 135% gennie, and mine's ready for the ocean again. So hopefully we can schedule to sail together soon.

Jay

I am not sure that the extra weight would also effect the spinnaker adversely. The other issue is that if you have to transfer back to the jib quickly, it will take an extra step to get the jib sheets reattached once the spinnaker is cleared. Are you going to be around the weekend of June 4th? Maybe we can get together with Jay.
