That location along with a plug fitting for the cable allows for an easy connect disconnect when raising and lowering the mast.

Joe,

My '93 is plywood cored.  It also has a raised molded compartment with a
faceplate just before the mast step.  If you have that, it is the designed
place to install your cable.
