[Rhodes22-list] 1984 for sale - Question from prospective buyer

I think that a good way to sum up a Rhodes22 is that it can take much more than the skipper.  Someone once said (it may have even been Stan) that the Rhodes22 can make it to Hawaii just fine...but not crew.  Other than the challenges of tacking in high winds, it is really a matter of personal comfort.

Great advice so far.

The soundness of the boat isn’t an issue.  With nine stays, positive
flotation, strong construction, and more than adequate hardware; it’s
probably safer than most boats up to yacht-size.  Reefed sails on a 3,000
pound boat put less stress on the rigging than you’d find on the set-up of a
lot of larger boats.

A “fair bit of sailing in 20 kt winds” concerns me a little.  I think Stan
said that you could make headway up to 28 knot winds, but Stan is a lot
better sailor than I am.  A big problem is the fun factor.  Somewhere around
a 15 knot wind the sail becomes more work than fun if I’m trying to make
headway.  Reefing sails, peeing overboard, and excess drinking all become
more difficult.

This might be list heresy, but if I sailed more than half the time in 15+
knot winds I’d want a bigger boat with a heavier keel to better deal with
the wind and waves.

I read your email on my Blackberry while sailing yesterday evening.  I
immediately checked the apparent wind on about a 65 degree reach and it was
13.1 knots.  Board up, boom up, 100% main, 120% Genoa, 5.3 knots.  I had a
little too much mainsail out and a lot too much Genoa which gave me too much
heel and significant weather helm but also gave me more speed.  Not the
least bit stressful and definitely way more fun than work.
