Re: varnish in outboard carb--- if you have a local airport bring a gas
can and buy aviation fuel. It never gunks up. Barrel life of auto gas is
3 months--barrel life of av gas is 7 years, I use it in my lawn mower
and motorbike--everything starts and runs even after sitting for a year
with no Stabil or any additive. Don't worry about the octane rating it's
only there to prevent detonation which is not a problem in watercooled
outboards. It doesn't mean the gas is any more powerful.

Rick,

I'm going to try?the heat method first as I do not want to deal with any

chemicals inside the cabin.?Googling "3m 5200 remover" was how I found
the heat
method. I also found??"antibond", but I read that it will also remove
your
lungs.

The epoxy is suppossed to become soft at 120 or 140 F.

I had an older rhodes whose centerboard cap was also epoxied, but the
epoxy was
old and brittle?and I had?no problem lifting the cap

OK so after trying to fix the temperamental 2005 Yamaha 9.9 that came
with
the boat (carburetor seemed to be stubbornly clogged with varnish or
whatever) and ending the season on an "iffy" note as far as the future
of
that motor is concerned, it was stolen off the boat when stored at a
place
where that had reportedly never happened before. So with insurance
compensation and a suspicion that ethanol had damaged the fuel system on
that Yamaha, we bought a new Merc 9.9 Bigfoot extra long shaft. I know,
most of you like the Yamaha but we had nothing but trouble with it and
the
Merc boasts that it can run an ethanol mix - parts are easier to get
etc. We hope it will work. Yes its a bit heavier by about 9 or so lbs.
Really wanted the x-long shaft and that only came on the 9.9.

OK that's the background. The old Yamaha had one of those nice
connections
between the head of the motor and the tiller. Of course when the
thieves
ran off with that motor they kept the connection that attached to the
motor
- still have the tiller side and the connector part - for what that's
worth. We'd like to rig this motor the same way but don't know where
the
part is - at Merc? Is it universal? Custom job? Anybody out there
have
any ideas?

BTW we aren't in the water yet this year - that should happen tomorrow
hopefully. Hope that motor starts at least.

Ron,
Can't say much about the tiller connection, don't have one.

Can commiserate on motor being stolen. A couple of years ago one was
taken off my boat while it was in the marina. I now keep mine locked at
all times. Was yours??

I, too, had problems with fuel gumming up my carburetor last year. I
thought I had it fixed this year but this past weekend it crapped out
again. Pulled the motor and will be taking apart the carburetor this
weekend. I added a 10 micron fuel filter to the fuel line but something
is acting up with the float switch.

The times I have had problems with my outboard have virtually always
been related to dirty/old/contaminated fuel. A good cleaning of the
float bowl and jet usually fixes it. Biggest problem is varnish or gum
build up from sitting too much. Fixed that by always adding Sta-bil to
the gas tank when filling up. That seems to prevent the varnish buildup
in the float chamber even after sitting all winter.

Cheers!

I would check with Stan and see if he can sell you the bracket that
attaches
to the motor housing and connects to the arm that connects to the tiller
(assuming that's the part you're talking about). Pretty sure it's a
custom
part. I can send you a picture of mine (bracket that is - sensitive to
that
since I'm in NY this week).

Do you mean the custom plastic block with stainless pin that is mounted
on the top of the motor cowl? It attaches to an arm that is attched to
the tiller and causes the ob to become a slave. I can send a pic
tomorrow if u need it. Stan makes them custom for each ob.

Luis: Great to hear that you are back. As Stan has passed on the last
few St.
Pete Shows, we had not realized that you were ill. Stay Well!

When you speak with Stan about the connecting pieces for the remote
tiller
operation, you should also order a new cap seal as it sounds like after
you
remove the "stuff" that was used to "seal the seal" it probably will
need to be
replaced.

Welcome back Luis! I love my electric start with an alternator so it
charges the battery, I have a 6 but an 8 would be great. Glad you are
going
to enjoy you boat.

Hello everyone,

I'm back on the list after a couple of years of absence.

I had some personal and health problems and had my boat on the trailer
all
this
time, but it is time to get back on the water.

I have to paint the bottom and repair the centerboard trunk's cap. It
has a
crack and a little bit of water gets in. I removed all 52 bolts only to
find
out
that it had been sealed with something that looks like 3M 5200. So, this
is
going to be a pain in the neck to remove.

Somebody told me that this epoxy actually softens when heated above 120
F
and to
use a heat gun to heat it and carefully lift the cap a bit at a time.
I'll
try
that this coming weekend.

Also, I need to get an engine as my old one won't run anymore and it is
so
old
that I do not want to spend any more money on it.

I'm thinking about the Tohatsu 8 hp, 20" Shaft, Tiller, Rope/Electric
start.
Any
comments on this? Luis A. Guzm?n II
