[Rhodes22-list] Where's the holding tank?

Dana--

Thanks very much. This will be useful, I'm sure. I'll let the list know what comes of the attempt to install an Airhead.

BTW, I'm 5'9" and shrinking, so I guess I'll be comfortable enough. It's good to learn that my taller friends will be accommodated. Or ac-commode-ated

Hi Peter,

I didn't spend too much time weighing differences between the two.  The Nature's head was cheaper, and I liked the idea of not having a separate seat.  The nature's Head seat is molded as part of the case.

It is a tight fit.  My boat is an 86 and it does not have the head compartment with the hinged door.  The composting toilet fits behind the bulkhead just like the porta potti did.

My boat never had a holding tank.  The storage area you refer to has a fresh water tank and two Trojan T-105 golf cart batteries.

Dana--

I guess the bad news is I won't be the first Rhodie with a composting toilet. But the good news more than offsets it: it can be done and works!

Why did you choose Nature's Head rather than Airhead? I think the former is an inch or so taller though it has a smaller footprint. (It's also almost $100 less expensive.)

More importantly, how did you locate it? Stan will be trying out various possibilities once the Airhead I ordered gets to Edenton, but any advice might save him time.

One more question, if you don't mind. Does your boat have a holding tank and, if not, can you make use of the space for storage? I guess that's 2 questions.

Thanks for responding.

P

I installed the Nature's Head last year.  We used a porta potti prior to that.  We sail on a lake with no facilities so a holding tank is out of the question.  The nature's head is a bit tall, but I am 6'2" and we don't have an
overhead hatch.  If you are shorter or if you have a hatch, that should
help. We don't use it very heavily, so i can't say how it would fare with a lot of use, but it is *way* better than the porta potti.  The pee tank can be emptied overboard in the lake, end the rest is left to compost.  No more "walk of shame" with the porta potti on the docks.  I would definitely do it again.

Can someone tell me where the holding tank for the marine toilet is located?

I'd like to try to substitute an Airhead composting toilet for the standard marine head in the R22-in-progress. Advantages: no water required, no holding tank, macerater, Y-value, thru-deck or thru-hull openings (except for a mushroom vent). Toilet paper isn't just ok, it's a plus. No need to find pump-out stations or empty the porta-potty, & you end up with free fertilizer for the flower garden.

Figuring out if or how it might be done is up to Stan, who says "We'll try anything once." But I'd still like to apply my head to the problem--if it is a problem. The main difficulty will probably be the height of the unit: about 18" with the lid up (and everyone has to sit to pee with the Airhead).

Has anyone ever tried to make this modification?
