[Rhodes22-list] What Size Outboard?

Rob -

I'm on Lake Erie, and have sailed an 87 Rhodes in winds up to about 25 knots
without too much problem. The biggest issue is wave size and the short
period between waves - the lake blows up quickly because it's so shallow.
I've been known to use the motor if pressed for time (25", extra long
shaft), but the waves can bounce the boat around enough to bring the prop
out of the water - especially on a port tack while motor sailing. To help
push the boat against wind and waves, I bought a 9.9 hp motor.

Also, consider the area you'll be sailing in Lake Erie. I'm at the west end,
and it's shallow with areas of heavy weed growth. To help deal with the
weeds, remember reverse is your friend. Spin the prop backward for a few
seconds and it'll unload most of the wrapped weeds.

Unfortunately the weeds aren't the worst of sailing on the lake. I hear the
water is gonna get hard in another few months. Tomorrow I'll be winterizing,
although I'm still relatively new at shrink wrapping. Hopefully this year
the result will be better than last year's - which looked like a bird house
I made in third grade. (No offense to any third graders out there ;-)

Dennis
