[Rhodes22-list] Ballast ?

John,

In my not so humble opinion I agree with Spreadgood. Adding weight and drag
external to the keel would probably due more harm than good. When thinking
about design changes to my boat I always ask myself, "Self, what would Stan
do?" I normally ask WWJD?, but He didn't need a boat.

If Stan added slightly more weight and depth to the keel I wouldn't complain
(since I don't trailer), but it would slow me down on a run and I'd probably
go aground more often. As for dealing with gusts in a 22' boat, you'd need
a whole lot of keel without much sail to de-tenderize the experience, with a
tremendous sacrifice in speed.

I'd rather have a boat that sails well when it's not gusting, which is most
of the time. I don't reef down for potential gusts but I do watch the water
for wind changes. When the gust hits I either head up into the wind to
depower the sail or let loose of the sheets, but only when I have guests
onboard. When I'm by myself I just hold on to my beer.
