[Rhodes22-list] I'm wet (with a twist)

Rob:

I am not looking for a permanent instillation, just something to manage water when I am off the boat.  I want to avoid over filling of the bilge.  I was planning on running the discharge hose up over the counter and into the sink.  I'll stow the whole rig while sailing.

Joe

>With a bilge pump, make sure you have a check valve, a manual on/off switch, or shore power.  Make sure the discharge hose is routed up (white hose, see photo) to ensure water won't drain back into the boat when heeled.  If there is no check valve the water tends to pump up the hose, the float shut the pump off and the water flows back down the hose where it turns the pump back on.  You can cycle the pump this way and it either burns out the pump (they are pretty cheap) or run your battery down. - rob

I am convinced that the water found a variety of sources of ingress.  However it got in, the ultimate conclusion remains unchanged... I have to deal with the situation, now and in the future.
>
>     By the way (anyone) I am trying to wire a small bilge pump for use when I am off the boat.  I want to plug it into my 12v power point with a cigarette lighter plug, but I can't get it to power up.  There are three leads off the pump: a red, a black and  brown, and there are no wiring instructions in the package.  I assume that the brown is for an external switch, which I won't need, since the pump has a self contained float switch .  But the pump seems to want something besides red and black to make it perform.  Any ideas? Thanks.
