Bob,
Great introduction and welcome to the family of Rhodes owners. Sounds like you got a very nice boat. You'll have to give us a report on the sail with the vertical battens sometime down the road. Enjoy! - rob

About the boat:

LOCATION: Lake Sunapee, NH
BOAT: Orion
MOTOR: Nissan 8hp 20" shaft
MISC: IMF, CDI, Kappa Sails with vertical battens, GB Mast Stepping System, VHF Radio, Wind Direction Indicator, 150 Genoa, rebuilt trailer (springs, bearings, etc...).

About the owner:

My family & I live in Sunapee NH and have been lucky enough to sail on Lake Sunapee since 1995. Both our boys were introduced on a Hobie 16 but are adjusting fine to the R22. I'm lucky enough to work at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH just a 40 min. run up the interstate. I'm currently crewing for a J80 as part of the LSCF (Lake Sunapee Cruising Fleet).

The purchase:

Stan was nice enough to forward some names of R22 owners that were in the market to sell. I (and my copilot) were ready to make the trip from NH to Ga, 3 weeks ago for a 40-50 hr (2 way) trip to pick up his 87 R22. Literally 5 days before the trip I became aware of an 84 in ME. Made the trip up to ME. (8hr round trip) and after 6 hours was lucky enough to come to an agreement and close the deal. The sellers were wonderful and I left that night with a permanent smile on my face. They say "everything happens for a reason". I feel fortunate for many things that have happened during my 3 year search for an R22. This list....the seller's I've met....the shared knowledge of R22's...and lastly the (4 hr) towing trip back from ME v. the( 25+ hr) towing trip from GA.

I see the 87 R22 (in GA) posted for sale and want all to know that Michael is a wonderful person & a gentleman. The buyer of his boat will not be disappointed.
Bob

Harbrlife,
Welcome to the list and congratulations on your new-to-you boat. Tell us a bit more about yourself and where you sail when you get a moment.

As long as your tongue weight is adequate on flat ground, towing up or down an incline should not pose a problem. It's probably not much different than some launch ramps. My off season storage location is at the bottom of my driveway. Steep (>10% grade) and gravel and my jeep manages it well enough. - rob

Hello,

I'm towing my '84 R22 with a Jeep Liberty CRD (diesel).

Should I be concerned about change in weight distribution when trying to back up my new-to-me R22 when the driveway has a short incline?

My concern is while backing up the driveway, the 2900 lb boat will increase tongue weight to a point that will make me loose control of the situation.

Thanks in advance!
