[Rhodes22-list] Newbie questions Suppliers/Anchoring/Sail Balance

Shawn,

I may get some disagreement on this but I think all boats get lee and
weather helm:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_helm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_helm

I like to balance the sails and then lock the tiller at less than 5 degrees
pushing the boat into the wind. As the boat moves into the wind it usually
falls off before the sails start to luff much. With the sails balanced and
minimal drag from the rudder you'd think you'd get maximal speed. Not so on
our boats. I can almost always get more speed if I'm not too close-hauled
by having too much Genoa out and noticeable lee helm. The power of the big
Genoa speeds you up more than the drag of the rudder slows you down.

Heeling and point-of-sail also affect helm balance, especially on light
boats like ours, so you need to make some adjustments if change your
directional tack.

But from my posts from yesterday and today you may not want to take my
advice. :)

Good luck!
