Hard to beat the Portuguese Water Dog. They love the water, are very friendly
(if developed correctly), protective, lively (the first 18 months you will get
great exercise), etc. They do like to swim; however, so obedience training is
critical. Oh, we do not have one yet as our travel plans are too ambitious.
Friends have one and they take her sailing all of the time.

If you want a dog that will read your mind, get an Aussie or Aussie mix or a
Plott hound. I have one of both, and I swear they are the smartest animals I
have ever known.

In the attached photo, Maggie (standing) is the Plott hound, the Aussie mix,
Jackie, is lying down. This was when he was recovering from Coon Hound
Paralysis. Maggie would stand by him all day to protect him.

Thanks Elle. I'm also thinking "Lab." Lots of my friends have Labs & they're all
sweet & energetic. Not the smartest dogs I've ever met, but lovable and devoted
& easy to be with. My folks favored hounds, especially bassets: I didn't have a
clue how wise a dog could be until Anonymous Bosch turned up in '79 at a cook
out.

Ron--

Thanks for reposting. In one of your earlier messages you commented on that
happy-looking poodle, but I've lost the message. I recall you said the dog is a
good second mate. What size poodle is s/he?

I'm asking because whatever dog I adopt next will have like the water. For
almost 40 years I've had German shepherds or shepherd-mixes. All but Barnaby,
the 4th & most recent, were dogs I rescued myself.

I really love shepherds. Mine have all been smart strong sweet and gentle males.
But only Barnaby's father Peyote liked the water, and he was 1/4 wolf. He went
swimming every chance he got. Anonymous Bosch, Molloy & Barnaby would walk 3
blocks to avoid a puddle. And of course bathing a double-coated dog isn't much
fun.

So I'm thinking of maybe a rescued standard poodle. Any insights or advice would
be welcome.

Thanks again,

P
