Rob, If she buys you a wifi only iPad you can use a Bluetooth GPS receiver like the Garmin GLo or Bad Elf.

I use the Garmin Glo with my wifi only iPad. It works great!

I prefer the Navionics app but the Garmin app is nice too. 

I put my iPad in a Lifeproof case this is waterproof.
