Most Ace hardware stores have a section where they sell an assortment of
bolts and other specialty hardware. A half ring in profile is like a half
moon. It's a steel semi circle closed at the ends. That closed end gives you
something flat to attach to the bow pulpit with a hose clamp. It has no
sharp areas to tear the line and the line will run smoothly

Thanks,

To keep the jib furling line from riding up above the drum go to a hardware
store and buy a half circle steel ring and a hose clamp. Clamp the half ring
to the bow pulpit close to the deck below the top flange of the drum. Run
the line through the ring and then back through its regular leads. The lower
angle will keep it on the drum. Also you cannot have such a thick line that
it makes the drum too full.

for this. Use your $450 to fix the sail or get a new one made and get a
tiller lock device. Autohelm on a small boat works best to hold you on a
good course while cruising. Just my opinion from 16 years using autohelm and
tiller lock.

That's what I hear...I understand they are in the $2,000 range depending on
options.

I look forward to your feedback on the latest features and benefits.

Lots of pics would be great!

Cheers,
Ted

I agree with Rummy that I don't think I would use an autopilot while working
on deck. Better to let the sails luff for that. I had an autopilot that I
used for long sails where helming became tiring. The longest was from
Kingston Ontario to Niagara on the Lake - the full length of Lake Ontario.
The trip was 30 hours continuous and the autopilot was virtually a necessity
It lasted the whole trip on one battery and took us through some pretty
rough weather keeping us exactly on course and much more accurately than
manual helming could accomplish. For very short term use I think it might
be more trouble than it is worth.

I am a bit concerned that if this problem has developed only recently after
many years and without other changes to the rigging, that it would be
important to make sure that the drum is not moving down the fore stay. On
some furling systems, such as my old original CDI system, if the unit is not
assembled properly the furler can actually undo the forestay turnbuckle. I
would want to make sure that it is assembled properly and the turnbuckle is
not being rotated.

I'm having problems with the furling line riding up and off the spool when
furling the headsail. I have replaced the block on the bow and replaced the
furling line. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas. I had the
boat about 16 years and this problem is new.

I have a ray marine st1000 and it works well with the r22. It connects
directly to my Garmen 525 and auto plots courses for me on long journeys.

I understand the concept of your reply but I'm not sure I know what a half
steel ring is.Can you explain that a little more. The replacement line is
the same diameter of the old one. Thanks

Also you cannot have such a thick line that
it makes the drum too full.

furling the headsail. I have replaced the block on the bow and replaced the
furling line. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas. I had the
boat about 16 years and this problem is new.

for this. Use your $450 to fix the sail or get a new one made and get a
tiller lock device. Autohelm on a small boat works best to hold you on a
good course while cruising. Just my opinion from 16 years using autohelm and
tiller lock.

I am purchasing a Raymarine ST1000 for a new R22 that will replace my storm
damaged model. My last boat did not have one but I have been persuaded of
its value. I had a recollection from old posts that installation requires
a couple of extensions and other parts that do not come with the package. I
found an old post of Roger's but do not know if those instructions are still
valid. Has anyone installed the auto-tiller recently who has addressed
this?

Bruce,
Captain Bob Keller had an autopilot on his R22 Yankee Clipper. Searching the
archives with this information may get you what you need including photo's.

The simple solution is to replace the sail. Having the IMF is a feature
which, if not working properly, totally negates the entire idea of having
one
in the first place.
Pulling the main out requires both hands. One on the outhaul and the other
keeping pressure on the inhaul. I usually pull the main out while the motor
is still running to keep me into the wind. I steer the boat with my butt
against the tiller handle if needed. Usually you don't need much steering
if
the sail comes out as advertised. Once the main is out I shut the engine
off, fall off the wind and then the genny comes out. Tah Dah.
Simple solution...replace the main sail.
