[Rhodes22-list] Mast stay chain plate

There have been a number of posts recently about replacing chain plates that
you can find in the archived. The smartest chainplate replacement/addition I
have seen is the one posted a few weeks back by Steve (redneckyc) under the
subject "Heres how I installed the new chain plates".

I would be persuaded to use that form of installation even after
reinstalling the existing chainplate. On older boats, all that holds the
chainplate in place is a single small screw that goes up into the core near
the end of the chainplate. On later model boats apparently the chainplates
have been glassed in as well so I expect yours falls into the former
category. The load is absorbed entirely by the bend in the chainplate.
Doubling up with a second chainplate or even just replacing the original
with one that goes down inside of the coach roof side outer skin will add
mightily to the strength and durability of the chainplate. In my case, I
filled the cavity between the liner and outer skin with epoxy coated plywood
and so I will have to attach new chain plates to the outside and bolt though
the skin, core and liner. That should also be very strong but it is a
ridiculous amount of work which I now realize could have been realized much
more easily had I thought of Steve's approach. I hate it when that happens.
I always manage to find the absolutely most difficult way possible to do
things. It is a talent I can't explain. Actually it was only feasible
because I had already removed the old ports and enlarged the openings -
which makes my story only that much more harrowing. So you can forget that
approach.

I wonder why your chainplate tore out though. Might the tension on your
stays be too great or so loose that it worked the fitting too much? The
cause would be well worth determining as you would not want that event to
repeat itself with this or any of the other chainplates.

Forward port mast stay was torn from the cabin top. Looks like the screws
were torn out cleanly. Has anyone replaced a forward stay chain plate ? How?
