[Rhodes22-list] One or Three

Graham,
I had a Hobie 16 which had a single point mast mount which pivoted. Perhaps
their parts would work for the Rhodes.

I have rebuilt my mast step to remove cracks in the gel coat and to ensure
the core was solid. I am interested in using the single screw when the
bracket is reinstalled so that the mast can pivot slightly. It sounds like
an interesting idea but I think I would need to work into the install a
smooth surface under the bracket that would protect the gel coat and allow
for rotation. If anyone has seen such an installation I would appreciate
knowing about it.

BTW, I had my mast fall while raising it and like others have mentioned it
was just as good that the sep was not through bolted. I broke a fitting on
the boom, which I can work around, bent the step bracket , which I was able
to straighten myself and had the deck step to repair but fortunately the
mast was ok.

I have been the master of every major disaster on my boat. In this case I
was so anxious to get the mast up I didn't check to make sure the ties
holding the mast in place were fastened and it wasn't until the mast was
almost vertical that it decided to make its move. Some might think that was
an entirely preventable mistake, and while that theory as its merits, I
prefer to think that with one of the oldest Rhodes in the fleet, I just
have
more experience. In this business it is hard to distinguish between
really
stupid mistakes and experience so I will go with the latter.

The single screw was your earlier email explanation. I thought it was
yours.
The fitting we acquired from WEST Marine for the 22 I am rehabbing has
three
holes. We did not check my partner's 22 until after you explained the
single
screw hinge and pivot system. He said his mast step is screwed down by one
pretty hefty screw. His is 78 or 79. Now we are thoroughly confused. I'm
sure we will hear from the gang pretty quick.

with your immovable object argument. Something has to give. Through bolting
and reinforcing the surrounding area of the cabin top, as we have done,
might raise the threshold level for dismasting. Your point is that at some
level of (leverage) force through bolting can result in costly damage to
the
structure. We agree. You also point out that the pivoting hinge would allow
the mast to come down in any direction without becoming disconnected from
the cabin top or disconnecting with little damage. That's a really good
point. By the way, pivoting and single screw attachment is news and I don't
think anyone mentioned that detail. Our fixture has three screw/bolt holes.
