[Rhodes22-list] Outboard motor setup

Marc, I can't comment on the propane motor vs. traditional gasoline (or
electric as some on the list have been discussing). As for the rest, I
think you've got two separate issues, the steering linkage and the remote
transmission/throttle control.

I think the steering linkage is great in tight places but not necessary for
motoring in open water, where you can lock the motor in position and steer
with the tiller more easily. Disconnecting the steering linkage to raise
the motor and sail is one of those things that requires you to limber up
and lean out over the stern rail, so I never use it unless needed in a
marina. So it really depends on your mooring or docking situation and your
intended destinations.

Having a remote control to shift and operate the throttle seems like a more
important priority to me. I just ordered a new 9.9 Yamaha 4-stroke and
will install a flush-mount shift and throttle control in the cockpit (I'm
thinking on the front of the lazarete). The tiller-mounted control on my
old Yamaha was great, but it's not available anymore on the gas motor.
Others have attached a surface-mount outboard control to the stern rail. I
personally would find reaching over the stern to use the controls on the
motor itself to be awkward and potentially dangerous in a tight situation.
Others may have a different experience.

Good luck and enjoy your boat!

Dave
