I have also seen where you can buy large floating beads that allow your dock line to roll up and down the piling (I can't remember what they are called).

Mac,
No danger of dinging the stern. The pulley is on the piling, the line goes from the stern, over a cleat on the piling to the dock .   the block is on the line between the piling  and the dock. It works OK Until we have really funky high or low tides.
