[Rhodes22-list] Reakistic Expectations for Rhodes 22

My experience with being pushed backwards in 12 - 15 knot winds all comes
from either not having my centerboard down, or incorrect sail trim. I
sailed a Holder 14 and we always thought the centerboard was down, but we
couldn't be sure, and it turned out that it was actually hanging up and not
coming out of the trunk all the way. So any time we tried to point upwind,
the boat would just seem to go where it wanted instead of following where I
had the tiller pointed. I could run and reach no problem. Close haul was
the issue.

Once I got the centerboard straightened out, my issue with being pushed
backwards while trying to head upwind had to do with trying to heal the boat
over for "speed" instead of letting sail out so that the centerboard and the
rudder could do their job correctly.

As for the fiberglass stress cracks, like Graham, I wouldn't have an idea on
where to start with why those occurred in just 4ft seas. I'd follow his
advice and seek an expert.

Have fun,

James

I would like to ask the group what I can realistically expect from my Rhodes
22. I was very disappointed last season that I could not make it to the Lake
Erie Islands. There were about 4 foot waves and they caused stress cracks in
my gel-coat all over the boat. Also, I could not hold course. Even with the
tiller held full over I was pushed in the opposite direction of where I
wanted to go unless I motor sailed. The wind was about 12 knots.

I sail on Sandusky Bay with no problems. Am I confined to the bay and more
protected waters? Was I doing something wrong? What kind of cruising do you
do in your Rhodes? Are my hopes to cruise to the Erie Islands not
realistic?

Sorry for the questions, but I am trying to get an idea of what I should
realistically expect from my Rhodes. I love my Rhodes, but i was hoping to
do more with her.

What are your thoughts on my dilemma?
