[Rhodes22-list] FW: Potential Purchase

The photo looks great for that price.  Sail condition, is there a trailer, look for water in the bilge, condition to tiller, look for soft spots on the deck, etc.  At that price, and if the picture is accurate, it would be hard to go wrong.  Remember it is an old boat so you will have projects.  But new ones develop projects as well.

too old - fixing costs more than boat is worth and then still have an
old boat - some parts no longer available like those ports, etc. best
advise from me when it comes to boats we did not build is to buy them to
use /as is/ and if learn to love a Rhodes, get a good one.

then go sailing in Australia per this family:

If you continue to be interested in this boat (which looks clean and well-maintained) a couple of things to investigate that no one has mentioned are the centerboard trunk (and the operation of the centerboard) and the obvious structural work on the cockpit seats. With the boat on the trailer, the centerboard and trunk can't really be inspected but the trunk is a major repair if there are problems. There are several threads in the archives of this list from people who have rebuilt the centerboard trunk on boats of a slightly older vintage than this one. It's a big job that will keep you from sailing. I'd be less concerned about the additional support added to the cockpit seats as they flex some in many of our boats. I would want to look at where the support is attached to make sure it isn't placing undo stress on the cockpit floor.

It is also mentioned that the sink is not connected to a drain. Usually, the sink connects to an open thru-hull above the waterline, behind the sink. You might want to see what is happening there.
