Hi Brooks:

I also have an 86 with IMF and 175% head-sail, although mine was recycled
in 2010.

Whether you use extender for launching depends on angle of ramp. based on
what you say I think you could try it w/o the extender.

Things I find it helpful to remember whether lowering or raising.

1. Loosen attached outer shrouds, make sure back stays are attached
2. Aft lowers attach to winch, which stabilizes fore/aft if forestay is not
attached
3.  Forward lowers attach to chain plate with chain extenders, which allows
transfer of control from forward to aft stays on raising/lowering mast.
4. Self-centering of mast depends on chain link used in step 3. Each boat
appears to be different.
