Jefferson,
I used small plastic furniture wedges. I put some PL construction adhesive in the stanchion base and connectors, installed the#12  SS screw or screws. The wedges were 1 " wide and 1" long.  I cutvthem into 1/4" wide pieces, then drove one or two of them into the space between the stanchion tube and stanchion mount. It took all the rattles and space out. They are soft enough you can trim them flush with a razor knife so you can not see them.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the info. Since there is no leaking - inch'allah - from the
stanchions, I might just try construction adhesive and small wedges to
stiffen the connection once I've drilled out the pop rivets and replaced
them with screws. Does that make sense?
