Rick,

I assume you mean that the boom car holds the clew down as you reef the
main.  Since my wife does not like to heel past 10 degrees and I always
sail with the pop top up, I rarely reef the mainsail.  I usually sail with
full main or none when heeling exceeds the comfort level.  On the rare
occasions that I have reefed the main, I simply tie a bungee through the
clew and around the boom to hold the clew against the boom.  This works
quite well.
