The guilty party responds...

The total load on the cabin top *is* outrageous, John. If you believe Loos,
the forestay tension will be about 320 pounds when you've tightened the aft
stays to about 180 pounds, the shrouds should be tightened to about 240
pounds, and the lowers should be 240 pounds. You could make a case for
reducing tension on the lower stays, since the Rhodes has 4 lowers - versus
most other boats having just two. Even if you reduce tension in the lowers
though, you still a *lot* of compression in the mast. On top of that load,
the compression in the mast probably goes up when you've got the rail in the
water, as Graham noted. (I'm looking at you here, Rummy!!)

After you get done playing with the trig functions on a calculator, you'll
find the cabin top is supporting nearly 2,000 pounds. The bottom line is
that you'd shove the mast through the cabin top if it weren't for the
compression post under the mast, which carries the compressive load to the
keel.

FWIW, the function of the lower stays is to keep the mast "in column".
Translation: the mast can bow and break if there's too much compression or
lateral load. For example, if you take a yard stick and push straight down
on it, all will be well - until you get to 5 or 10 pounds of pressure. At
that point, the yardstick will bow and may break. If you had someone hold
the middle of the stick while you pushed (the job of the lower stays), the
yardstick could carry much higher loads.

We can kick this thing around till the cows come home, but if we'd like to
get to the bottom line, we need to get General Boats to weigh in. Stan??

Case in point: somebody mentioned the Loos settings recommending 240lbs. If
you did that for the inner shrouds you'd have a total 960lbs of force on the
cabin top. Does not sound wise to me and probably cause some cabin top
distortion.

Most of the load should be on the outer stays. If you're seeing distortion
of the cabin top under sail from the inner stays something is not right in
your rigging. There's too little tension on the outer stays and/or too much
on the inner ones.

Remember we're talking about the inner stays here... I remember reading
quite a while back that their primary function was as backup to the outer
stays, so you don't lose the whole rig if a main stay mails.
Consequently they should probably not have much tension at all. I couldn't
put a number on it, but I'd say take the slack out and give the turnbuckle
another turn or so and that's all.
