You're right Curtis - it helps as long as the line between the traveler and the boom is perpendicular to the traveler and the boom. As the boom moves further out, its effectiveness is reduced a bit. 

That still leaves the minor matter of a preventer, if you're worried about that kind of thing...

So my 1979 Rhodes came with a mainsheet traveler rail in the cockpit along the cabin wall.  It didn't come with an actual traveler for it, but the boom has the hardware to support moving the mainsheet forward.  When the mainsheet is far enough forward, doesn't that reduce the need for a vang?
