Mary Lou,

Thanks so much for your help. The photos are a great help. I will do as
you suggest, but I am not optimistic. Unfortunately, I think hauling the
boat will be needed to check this out, given the facilities at the marina.
I don't have Stan's mast lowering system so how difficult will it be to
lower the mast without it?

Hi Susan.
Take Joe's advice first and inspect in calmer weather. Unwrap it and if it
is all the way out, see if you can furl it. If it is not all the way out,
see if you can pull it further out and then furl it. If the sail is indeed
sitting lower in the slot, it may have come loose at the head.

If it is the head of the sail the repair could be very simple or a bit more
complex depending on what failed. However, you will have to lower the mast
in either case. If you have spot where there is a lot of dock to work from
(the furling tube has to come all the way out of the mast to make the
repair) and the mast lowering system and some helprers, it is doable without
hauling the boat.

The head of the sail is most likely held to the furling tube with a tab on
the sail that is held in place by a tang on the mast attached with a screw
on each side. If this is the case, the failure could be either the screw or
the tab on the sail that the screw goes through.
If it is the screw, the repair is simple - just replace the screw and you
should be good to go. If it is the sail, you may be able to just put the
screw through the tab and go sailing or you may need someone with a heavy
duty sewing machine like a sailmaker to replace the tab.

I've attached two photos of the attachment point taken when we replaced our
main.

Here's hoping you just need a calm day and the sail will furl but in any
event best of luck with the repair.
